You don't need an account to sketch locally. Your work stays in your browser. Sign in with Google when you want to autosave to Drive.
RoughSketch uses Google's narrow drive.file scope. We can only see files you create or open through RoughSketch. The rest of your Drive stays private.
RoughSketch is an independent project built on the open-source Excalidraw editor (MIT-licensed). It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Excalidraw or Excalidraw+.
Recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. Older browsers can still load the editor, but they may miss features like offline drafts.
Yes. Drag a .excalidraw file onto the canvas, or use the Open command in the file menu. The file is parsed locally in your browser, so nothing gets uploaded.
Yes. The export menu can save your diagram as PNG, SVG, or .excalidraw. Everything runs in your browser, so the file downloads straight to your device.
Yes. RoughSketch is a Progressive Web App, so the editor keeps working after the first load. Local drafts stay safe in your browser and sync to Drive automatically when you reconnect.

RoughSketch is also a remote MCP server at https://roughsketch.app/mcp: add it as a custom connector, sign in with Google, and the assistant can search, read, preview, create, update, rename, arrange and trash sketches that live in your own Drive. Setup steps for each client are at https://roughsketch.app/connect. Like the app itself, it can only see files you create or open through RoughSketch — the rest of your Drive stays private. An edit to a sketch's contents is refused if the sketch changed since the assistant last read it, and trashing a sketch is recoverable from Drive.
