Frequently Asked Questions

Is RoughSketch free?

Yes. RoughSketch is free to use. There are no paid tiers and no ads.

Do I need an account to use RoughSketch?

You don't need an account to sketch locally. Your work stays in your browser. Sign in with Google when you want to autosave to Drive.

How does RoughSketch save to Google Drive?

RoughSketch uses Google's narrow drive.file scope. We can only see files you create or open through RoughSketch. The rest of your Drive stays private.

Is RoughSketch related to Excalidraw?

RoughSketch is an independent project built on the open-source Excalidraw editor (MIT-licensed). It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Excalidraw or Excalidraw+.

Which browsers does RoughSketch support?

Recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. Older browsers can still load the editor, but they may miss features like offline drafts.

Can I import .excalidraw files?

Yes. Drag a .excalidraw file onto the canvas, or use the Open command in the file menu. The file is parsed locally in your browser, so nothing gets uploaded.

Can I export diagrams to PNG or SVG?

Yes. The export menu can save your diagram as PNG, SVG, or .excalidraw. Everything runs in your browser, so the file downloads straight to your device.

Does RoughSketch work offline?

Yes. RoughSketch is a Progressive Web App, so the editor keeps working after the first load. Local drafts stay safe in your browser and sync to Drive automatically when you reconnect.

Does RoughSketch work on mobile?

Yes. The editor is responsive and runs in any mobile browser. If you use it often, add RoughSketch to your home screen for a full-screen view.
